Artist Statement:Primarily working with materials such as clay and wood, Cheyenne translates intangible thoughts into tangible forms, allowing herself and others to connect with the memories and emotions embedded within. Her process-intensive creations often incorporate motifs from her Chinese American heritage, using patterns and textures to convey the complexities of these experiences. By experimenting with scale and surface decoration, she aims to enhance the sensory and emotional impact of her work, creating sculptural objects that serve as bridges to shared histories and expressions beyond words.
Artist Bio:
Cheyenne Yu is a Las Vegas-based artist from San Francisco, grounded in the power of touch and sensory experiences. A recent graduate with a BFA in Studio Art from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, she uses her art to explore themes of family relationships, memory, and Asian American identity. Inspired by childhood memories and familial connections, her pieces become vibrant tapestries of emotion and reflection.
“This piece is built on wonder and a relationship with self. I use snakes as a self-portrait but also as a form to experiment and dream of other worldly notions. I consider this piece one for dreamers, those who still remember how to play and reimagine mundane objects to larger beings.”
